Casco Viejo, Panama
One thing that feels true each time we put a Billie Holiday record on the mat is her saying ”Jazz is about freedom,” in all its polyamorous layers. And each year since 2003, Fulbright Scholar, UNESCO Artist for Peace and renown jazz pianist Danilo Pérez has helped bring together jazz artists from around the world to his hometown for the Panama Jazz Festival to celebrate the ideals of freedom. The festival has been going on all week, and tonight marks the big sonic send-off. At Danilo’s Jazz Club in the center of it all, Phil Ranelin will help circle the wagons one last night with his trombone and everyone for miles around will join in the vibes from the tribe. We’ve been partnering with stalwart jazz radio station WWOZ from The Big Easy for this year’s festival, and part of the deal, sport, is we’re all lucky enough to stream the festival from our very own homes.
